The Slap Hat Extreme Self Defense Cap is one of a kind. This truly unusual idea turns about the concept of
headgear as merely protective and puts hats on the offensive team for the first time since OddJob hurled his top hat
slicer at James Bond. The Slap Hat looks like a tactical uniform, but hidden beneath the fabric is an evenly
distributed beanbag-style layer of something secret that's said to have the same density as lead. Maybe that's an
exaggeration, because if did match the density of lead, it would undoubtedly be lead. We're hoping it's not, because
spent uranium would be much more exciting.
Very flexible for a two pound hat (the Slap Hat ships at three pounds but not all that is hat) this tactical cap is more
than your ordinary headgear. Grab it by the bill and it works like any sap or blackjack, although the impact isn't
quite so focused. A true sap is a narrow bag partly filled with something heavy, like lead shot. Swing it and all the
shot goes to one end. It's like being hit with a big rock, and all the weight is focused in one small location. The Slap
Hat does deform with the force of a swing, becoming long and skinny instead of wide and flat. Fold the brim for a
more effective thrashing. Land the button on a bony spot and you may not believe that the Slap Hat isn't as lethal as
a sack of lead shot, but it actually isn't. Not quite.
One size fits all, with a Velcro adjustment band in the back. The Slap Hat is fairly comfortable for something this
heavy, but many will find that oddly fatiguing at first. Anyone who's worn a combat helmet knows the feeling --
there's a little bit of dashboard bobblehead in all of us. Not having to wear the steel pot is a primary incentive for
trying out for the Special Forces and their lightweight berets. On the other hand, the Slap Hat is great exercise for the
neck muscles, and after wearing it awhile you won't notice the extra weight. If you're looking for a truly surprising
response to an attacker, this is surely it.
To be a good self defense option, the Slap Hat will require practice and some unique approaches to the problem. Try
it out on targets to get an idea of what it will actually do. Striking bony areas is always more effective than
well-padded fleshy targets.

Looking for the Good Gear, and the Unusual
Outside the Window
I spent most of my time in school
looking sideways out the window and
planning my escape. I made lists of
gear I would need and skills I'd need to
learn. What I wanted was more than
just visiting the outer world or
surviving it long enough to get home. I
wanted to live out there.
Just the Essentials
Gear still fascinates me. I like to try it
out, even if I don't think I need it.
Actually, you don't need a whole lot to
live out there. If you go and you stay
awhile, the gear gradually goes away
and you find other answers. Most of
what you really need fits inside your
head. The rest is temporary.
